40 percent turnout in Latvian European Parliament election

Only two out of five Latvians, 40.71 percent to be exact, voted in the Baltic country's first elections to the European Parliament, the Central Election Commission said early Sunday, citing almost complete turnout figures.

The figure included participation in all of the country over 15 hours of voting, but did not include the last two hours of voting in suburbs of the capital Riga, which were still being counted.

Officials said the missing data was not expected to significantly change the final turnout figure.

Latvia on Saturday became the first Baltic state to vote for members of the European Parliament, with 1.4 million voters able to choose nine members of the assembly.

Results are not due to be released until voting in all 25 EU member states has finished late Sunday.
