The Open Society Institute-Brussels is the representative office of OSI and the broader Soros foundations network in Western Europe. It acts as a liaison office to facilitate collaboration between the network and West European partners, including the various institutions of the European Union, bilateral donors, and non-governmental organisations. OSI-Brussels also works to raise awareness in European intergovernmental organisations, governments, and opinion-making circles about issues of concern to the network.
Areas of Responsibility
The Senior Policy Officer for Africa at OSI-Brussels is responsible for facilitating links between OSI’s Africa-based foundations, initiatives and grantees, and EU policymakers in Brussels and other European capitals. He/she will promote OSI’s perspectives on African issues, as well as encourage the institutions of the European Union and wider policy community to understand Africa’s challenges and ensure a hearing for African civil society.
Reporting to the Director of OSI-Brussels, the Senior Policy Officer for Africa will also work closely with colleagues in OSI’s network programmes which address issues including, but not limited to, HIV/AIDS, extractives sector transparency and governance.
Tasks
- Build and maintain contacts with EU actors in the areas of responsibility and monitor relevant EU developments;
- Maintain regular contacts with national foundations, network programmes and strategic partners in the areas of responsibility, and facilitate their access to EU policy makers;
- Develop and implement advocacy strategies towards EU policy makers in the areas of responsibility;
- Initiate and maintain working relationships with relevant think tanks in Brussels, EU member states and countries of responsibility.
