EU takes Italy to court for not recovering illegal aid
The European Union's executive commission said Thursday it was taking Italy to the European Court of Justice for failing to recover illegal state aid.
The commission said Italy had not acted on its ruling of March 30, 2004 that an Italian scheme to help buyers of insolvent firms was contrary to EU state aid rules and that the money paid out should be reimbursed.
"A year later Italy has not yet notified any steps to recover the aid," it said.
The action marks the third time this year that the commission has taken a member country to court for not carrying out a decision on state aid.
