Slovak PM tells French, Dutch to come up with EU vision

10 March 2006, 23:29 CET

Slovak Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda on Friday called on France and the Netherlands to come up with a plan for the proposed EU constitution after their voters rejected it last year.

"It is desirable that the French and Dutch representatives describe their vision during the next European Union summit in June," Dzurinda told students at the University of Bratislava during a visit by British counterpart Tony Blair.

The EU was plunged into crisis last year after French and Dutch voters rejected a proposed constitution designed to provide a legal framework for the bloc which enlarged in 2004 from 15 to 25 members.

Dzurinda said: "I don't like it that certain people say that the European constitution is dead. It is neither serious nor moral to stop the process half way and say that we have no desire" to continue.

"Things should allow us to recapture consensual elements in the treaty and create something new."

The single-chamber Slovak parliament voted in favour of ratifying the treaty in May 2005.
