EU regulators approve Kraft's purchase of Danone's biscuit's unit

09 November 2007, 17:30 CET

(BRUSSELS) - EU antitrust regulators approved on Friday the acquisition of French food group Danone's biscuits business by Kraft Food of the United States after finding that the deal would not stifle competition.

But the European Commission gave its blessing only after Kraft promised to sell a range of Spanish biscuit brands, a plant in Spain and a Hungarian chocolate bar brand.

"In view of the remedies offered, I am satisfied that competition will remain vigorous after the merger," Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said.

Danone sold its biscuits business, whose LU cookies have been staple snacks for generations of French children, to Kraft last month for 5.3 billion euros (7.9 billion dollars).
