    Slovakia joined the European Union in 2004 and has aspirations to adopt the euro in 2009.

    Surface area: 49 030 km2
    Population: 5 393 637 (Eurostat 2007)
    Joined the European Union: 1 May 2004
    Currency: Slovak koruna (SKK)

    Euro information

    Status: Slovakia is not yet a member of the euro area. The Slovak koruna joined the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) on 28 November 2005, and observes a central rate of 35.4424 to the euro with standard fluctuation margins of ±15%.

    Exchange rate: The current euro to Slovak koruna foreign exchange reference rate can be consulted on the website of the European Central Bank (updated daily).

    Adoption of the euro: Slovakia hopes to adopt the euro on 1 January 2009.
