- The Substantive Law of the EU: The Four Freedoms (Amazon, Paperback) by EUbusiness — last modified 20 September 2007, 21:57 CET
- This book focuses on the substantive law of the EU with regard to the free movement of goods, persons, services, and capital. An introductory chapter outlines the background to EU law in this sphere; the role of free trade theory, the development of economic integration until the present day, and the fundamental principles underpinning this development. The following sections then provide a detailed examination of the major categories - goods, persons, services and capital - and a concluding section deals with the legal issues raised by the ongoing process of harmonisation within the single market. The author makes judicious use of case studies to illustrate and develop central issues, diagrams and flowcharts to clarify the more complex areas of this sphere of EU law. - The Future of Investing in Europe's Markets after MiFID (Amazon, Hardcover) by EUbusiness — last modified 20 September 2007, 21:59 CET
- The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) is the biggest change programme Europe's capital markets have ever attempted. It takes all the protection away from Europe's Stock Exchanges and forces investment banks, brokers and dealers to guarantee best execution. The organisational, process and technology changes demanded by the MiFID are massive. In order to understand these challenges, industry commentator Chris Skinner has gathered the views of Europe's leading figures in the MiFID community to discuss its implications. From an introduction from the European Business School and European Commission, through the views of leaders in the key constituencies of MiFID Connect and the MiFID Joint Working Group, through to organisations supporting the markets such as Reuters and SWIFT, this book provides a 360 degree perspective of the world of investing in Europe's markets after the MiFID implementation. Anyone who has anything to do with dealing, trading and investing in European equities and instruments will find this book an essential guide to the markets now and into the future. With this book as their guide, readers will understand: the key MiFID business issues; how to implement the directive; and how it will affect the markets once it comes into force.
- An Introduction to Competition Law (Amazon, paperback) by EUbusiness — last modified 18 September 2007, 11:50 CET
- Competition law is a subject of central importance. Reports in the press concerning the subject appear almost daily. An accessible introduction to this legal field is thus indispensable for students and practitioners alike. This book is intended to serve as a first acquaintance with competition law. It is written in particular for students who intend to study a foundation course in competition law. The current competition law in the UK consists of two main levels: EC competition law and UK competition law. In this introduction both levels are covered, along with an abbreviated introduction to the EC rules on state aids. An important function of this book is to provide an insight into the combined system of UK and EC competition law. This means that, in spite of the introductory character of the book, a large number of topics needs to be discussed. Without coverage of the basic principles of competition law, the system and its workings are impossible both to understand and explain. Therefore, for the three main subjects (the prohibition of cartels, the prohibition of the abuse of a position of dominance and the supervision of 'concentrations' (mergers and acquisitions)) extensive examples, drawn from European and UK practice, have been provided. These examples are then used in the explanation of the general principles, taking into account the changes as a result of the recent introduction of Regulation 1/2003. With this approach, the book aims to reach a broad range of readers: students, teachers in further and higher education, officials and practising lawyers who are not usually faced with competition law issues in their everyday working lives. Extra information has also been included in the footnotes, indicating references to the more specialised literature where this seemed appropriate. In this way, the authors hope to provide a clear, up-to-date introduction to this complex and fascinating area of the law, while also giving scope to the reader to develop and extend his or her knowledge of the subject still further.
- Impact of EU Law on the Regulation of International Air Transportation by EUbusiness — last modified 18 September 2007, 11:38 CET
- On 5 November 2002, the European Court of Justice delivered its 'open-skies' judgment, a landmark decision which may be the beginning of a new era in the regulation of international air law. The consequences of this judgment may not only affect the European Union and its Member States; this book shows how it could change the future regulation of international aviation worldwide. The first part of this book describes the difficulties arising from the fact that the competence for the regulation of air transportation in Europe is divided between the EU and the Member States. This division of power will also affect the conclusion of air-service agreements made with countries outside of Europe. In the second part of the book, the author examines a subject that was not part of the 'open-skies' judgment, but which he believes will become a problematic consequence: the distribution of air-traffic rights within the European Union.
- Aspects of European Cultural Diversity (What Is Europe?) by EUbusiness — last modified 11 September 2007, 18:32 CET
- The word 'Europe' is seen and heard constantly, in newspapers, on television and children are taught about it in school. But what does it really mean to us? Does it have the same meaning for everyone? How does it affect our everyday lives? Do we consider ourselves to be Europeans and what does that mean in practice? This book concentrates on aspects of European cultural diversity. The four essays included deal with language, education, the mass media and everyday culture. The issues under discussion are those that strongly influence the way in which we define our common, everyday identity. They are also issues which determine our access to opportunities of different kinds. The book is designed to enable readers to identify those factors which make them and their own environment unique and to place themselves within the context of everyday Europe.
- EU Food Law: Protecting Consumers and Health in a Common Market (Modern Studies in European Law) (Hardcover) by EUbusiness — last modified 11 September 2007, 18:15 CET
- This is the first comprehensive analysis of the European Union law of food regulation. It details the way in which EU law impacts upon the production and sale of food throughout the Union. It examines the legal protection accorded to the free movement of food within the EU, discussing those circumstances in which Member States may derogate from this principle, in particular where this is done to protect human health or safeguard consumer interests. Chapter four discusses and places in context the international trade law influences on EU food law. Chapter five describes EU responses to recent food safety crises - avian influenza and BSE. The book also deals with issues such as nutrition law and policy, obesity, GMOs, organic food, animal welfare and food naming and labelling. This book offers an account of the historical, political, sociological and jurisprudential context of European Union food law. The author, who is an academic and consultant in this area, translates the legal and scientific complexities of food law into a lucid and compelling narrative. The resulting work will also prove an indispensable guide to the practitioner.

The objective of the new legislation is to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment whilst maintaining an efficient internal market and innovation and competitiveness in the chemical industry.
