Sport and the EU - questions and answers

Request for funding?

Possibilities to obtain financial support for projects related to sport are very limited at European level as the European Union does not have a specific competence in the field of sport. For the time being the Commission does not have any specific budget for supporting sport projects.

However, sport-related projects can sometimes be eligible in the framework of other EU programmes, which you can find on the web-page "Grants, funds and programmes by EU
policy".

Request for information?

The 'What's up' section of the Sport website contains general information on sport policy and key documents such as press releases, speeches, memos, meeting reports etc., which illustrate the involvement of the European Commission in the field of sport in Europe.

Several international treaties in the field of sport can also be found on the website of the Council of Europe

Finally, you can view the International Convention Against Doping In Sport of UNESCO, or visit UNESCO for more general information on UNESCO and sport.

Questions from students and researchers?

Unfortunately, the Commission's Sport Unit lacks the resources to provide information to students or researchers who have specific questions on sport policies in the European Union.

White Paper on Sport

To acknowledge the increasing social and economic role of sport in the European Union, the European Commission decided to prepare a White Paper on Sport.

Based on extensive consultations, the White Paper gives an overview of the current state of play and provides strategic orientation on the role of sport in the European Union.
